MATERA: FROM THE HILLS
TO THE SEA
[ Cod. 02 IT ]
Duration: 4 days - 3 nights
A charming and intriguing trip through the
history of the Matera area; you’ll go from the Palaeolithic
and Neolithic settlements of the Rock Church Park to the
vestiges of Magna Grecia and from the Sassi of Matera to
the Southern Renaissance.

Day I
- The Sassi and historic
centre
Arrival
and getting situated in the Hotel; lunch at a restaurant
in the Sassi.
- In the afternoon,
starting at the Vittorio Veneto Piazza, a synthesis of
the historic and architectural continuity of the city,
we move on the Crypt of the Spirito Santo and the Apogees.
Continuing on towards the Sedile Piazza we will visit
the 13th. Century Cathedral, in Pugliese Romanesque style.
Beyond the Duomo Piazza one faces the Porta Empia (Pitiless
Door) with a breath-taking panorama of the Caveoso Sasso
and the Moors. Then, we will visit some Rock Churches
and the Casa Grotta (Cave House), a museum-habitation
with typical furnishings. Coming back up to the 1700’s
level, we’ll visit the small Pascoli Piazza and
the fascinating Baroque Church of Purgatory, and the canvas
painting of Carlo Levi “Lucania 61”.
- Dinner at the Hotel
restaurant.
Day II - Matera:
The rock churc park and Metaponto
- After breakfast, we depart for an excursion
in the Rock Church Archaeological Park of Natural History:
a
short trip on the Matera Moors to discover the treasures
of Rupestrian civilizations and the botanical and faunistic
heritage of the area. Visit to the Entrenched Village
of the Timone Moors, the Rupestrian Jazzo of S. Falcione,
the Rupestrian Church of the Madonna delle Tre Porte (three
doors) and the Fortified Farm of Spanish Towers.
- Lunch on a Farm.
- In the afternoon – transfer to
Metaponto, the important site of Magna Grecia. Visit the
Archaeological Park and the Palatine Tables and the Museum.
- Return to Hotel and have dinner.
Day
III - Valsinni and Anglona
- Breakfast and departure for Valsinni,
the ancient fief of Favale.
Minstrels reception; delivery of “passes”
for entrance into the fief; visit the Isabella
Morra Castle and the exhibit of ancient artisan
work-shops. Lunch at an Osteria.
- In the afternoon, after our “sentimental
journey” in the Literary Park in the company of
Minstrels, we move on to Anglona
(Tursi) to visit the fascinating and isolated Basilica
of S. Maria, in Romanesque style with medieval frescoes.
- Return to Hotel and have dinner.
Day IV - The
Matera hills
After
breakfast we depart for Montescaglioso,
the site of the most important Benedictine
Monastery in the Region. After a visit to the ancient
Abbey of San Michele Archangelo
we move on to the historic centre and the Madre Church.
Then, Extra virgin Olive Oil tasting and lunch at a Farm
with a beautiful view of the Bradano Valley.
- In the afternoon, we move on to Miglionico,
a small medieval town and site of the Malconsiglio Castle
where in 1485 a Conspiracy of Barons plotted to assassinate
King Napoli Ferdinando I of Aragon, a conspiracy which
ended with the massacre of the Barons in the room of Malconsiglio.
Here you’ll find the valuable polyptych by Cima
da Conegliano in the Castle’s Madre Church.
Take a walk in the Natural Reserve of San Giuliano.
- Return to Matera.
