BASILICATA GASTRONOMIC AND WINE TOURS

Here we suggest some itineraries that may be personalized upon request:

Duration: 7 days, 6 nights

A fascinating itinerary where you’ll spend a week savouring the flavours of Lucania among its hills and countryside.

Day I

  • Materabread and pasta
    Arrival at Bari airport and transfer to Matera (45 min.).
  • Get situated at the B&B (Agriturism or Old Residence);
  • Lunch at a restaurant in the Sassi. Afternoon guided tour of the Sassi and historic centre. Evening at a bread and fresh pasta workshop.
  • Dinner at a restaurant in the Sassi.

Day II

  • Montescagliosoolive oil and cheese
    The Rock Church Archaeological Park: A brief trip in the Matera moors to discover the archaeological treasures left by Rupestrian Civilizations and the area’s natural treasures of flora and fauna. Tasting of Lucano cheeses among olive groves and old grazing paths. Tasting workshop of: extra virgin olive oil. Entertainment of traditional folk music. In the evening, visit the pretty town of Montescaglioso, site of one of the most important Benedictine Monasteries in the region.
  • Dinner at the Agriturism.

Day III

  • VenosaAglianico wine
    Transfer to Venosa (75min.). Spend the day in the town that is the birthplace of the Latin poet Horatio (Carpe Diem). Visit the Abbazia della Trinità e all’Incompiuta Archaeological Park. After lunch, visit a typical vineyard B07.TIF with explanations of the cultivation of the “Aglianico” grape variety. Then return to the town to discover ancient flavours and try typical products of the area. This will be a real trip into the past when you try the cheeses, sausages, dried peppers and other local products accompanied by a good glass of Aglianico (the local red wine, first decanted in the 1st. Century B.C. by the Latin poet Horatio Flacco the 5th.).
  • Return to Matera and have dinner at the Hotel.
    (In October it is also possible to go to Melfi for the chestnut festival)

Day IV

  • From Pietrapertosa to Castelmezzano
    Transfer to the Gallipoli Cognato Park (60 min.). Visit the ruins of the Saracen fortress of Pietrapertosa, almost entirely carved out of rock and offering a great panoramic view of the Basento valley. Then on foot, we take a path that, over towered by the rugged Dolomites of Pietrapertosa, leads us to the town of Castelmezzano.
  • Lunch in the typical local restaurant that was awarded best Lucano restaurant in the world in 2001.
    Visit the historic centre of Castelmezzano.
  • Return to Matera for dinner.

Day V

  • MetapontoKiwi and marmalades
    Depart for Metaponto, the important site of Magna Grecia (the Greek Archaeological site). Visit the Apollo Licio Archaeological Park and Museum of the Palatine Tables.
  • Lunch at an Agriturism where it will be possible to try home-made fruit preserves. In the afternoon there will be a visit to a kiwi farm.
  • Transfer to Rotonda and have dinner at the Hotel. (In winter it is possible to substitute this stop with one at Stigliano, a mountain town in the Matera area where they produce a locally known sausage and the pastorale, a local lamb stew.

Day VI

  • Senisepeppers and mushrooms
    Breakfast then departure for a short walk in the Pollino National Park.
  • Lunch. In the afternoon – transfer to Senise to try typically prepared peppers and mushrooms.
  • Departure for Maratea, dinner and overnight stay.

Day VII

  • The Tyrrhenian coast
    Morning excursion to Maratea: the devastatingly beautiful coastline. The Lucano mountains vertically precipitate the sea with clear and sheer limestone cliffs interrupted by white or pebbly beaches.
  • Then lunch and departure for the Naples airport.
