BASILICATA BY BICYCLE

Duration: 7 days – 6 nights

Time of year advised: April - October

Day I

• Arrive in Matera and get situated at B&B or Hotel; you’re free to lunch where you want.
• Visit the Sassi, a UNESCO world heritage site, the historic centre and the Cathedral (in Pugliese-Romanesque style).
• Dinner at a typical restaurant in the Sassi.

 

Day II

• Morning tour of the San Giugliano natural reserve.
• Afternoon tour of Miglionico, site of the Malconsiglio Castle; in the evening, dine and overnight stay at an Agriturism.

 

 

Day III

• Breakfast and departure for the Rock Church Archaeological Park and Montescaglioso, pretty town and site of the most important Benedictine Monasteries in the Region. Return to Hotel.
• Dinner at a restaurant in the Sassi.
  Route = around 60 km. with two hills lasting around 4 km, average incline = 4%. Moderately difficult.

Day IV

• Morning departure for Metaponto, the important site of Magna Grecia.
  Visit the Archaeological Park of Apollo Licio, at the Palatine Tables and at the Museum.
• Afternoon in Pisticci and among the calanchi landscapes.
• Dinner at an Agriturism.
  Route: 70 km. total and without much difficulty, with one hill at the end, about 4 km. long and 5° inclination. We will meet up with some state highways and light traffic.

Day V

• Morning departure for Anglona (Tursi) and visit to the Romanesque style S. Maria Sanctuary with medieval frescoes. Transfer to Valsinni: the town suspended between the sea and mountains, above the Sinni river.
• Dinner and over-night stay at an Agriturism.
  Route: about 60 km. on hilly terrain.

Day VI

• Morning departure for Maratea: The coastline is devastatingly beautiful. The Lucano mountains reach into the sea with clear jutting limestone cliffs interrupted by white or pebbly beaches.
• In the evening you’ll visit the ancient centre, filled with tight winding streets and the houses built one on top of the other.
• Dinner and overnight stay.
  
  About 80 km. total with small undulating hills on provincial roads, thus making it moderately difficult.

 

Day VII

• Morning walk in the beautiful town of Rivello that soars high above the Noce Valley.
• Transfer to the Naples airport.

 

 

 

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

• 5 days bicycling on hilly terrain, appropriate for cyclists with similar previous experience. 50 to 80 km. Legs to be completed in 4-6 hours in the course of a day.
